The Bundaberg Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is a vital part of the region's recycling efforts, processing household recyclables from the Bundaberg Council's yellow-topped bins. Operated by IMPACT Community Services, the MRF also serves as an employment and training hub for NDIS-supported employees, offering opportunities to individuals with disabilities.
At the MRF, a wide range of materials such as paper, cardboard, glass, plastics, and metals are sorted and baled for repurposing, helping to divert waste from landfills. The facility employs advanced sorting technology to ensure that these materials are efficiently processed. Recyclables are sorted into categories like PET and HDPE plastics, aluminium, steel, and glass, all of which are prepared for reuse in manufacturing processes.

However, contamination remains a challenge. Items like plastic bags, food waste, medical waste, and oils can cause serious issues, from clogging machinery to posing health risks to staff. To prevent these problems, the council urges residents to follow proper recycling practices. For example, e-waste (such as old computers or mobile phones) should be taken to the council’s designated waste facilities for separate processing, as it cannot be handled at the MRF.
